Robert "Bob" Wetzell
David Robert “Bob” Wetzell was a longtime Urbana resident and art teacher in the Springfield City Schools who lived quietly with a deep love for animals. When he passed away in 2014 at the age of 80, he left no close family, only the wish that his estate be used to give neglected and unwanted animals a second chance.
That wish became the Champaign County Animal Welfare League. Bob directed that his roughly $3 million estate be used to create a secluded farm sanctuary with space for rehabilitation, training, a pet cemetery, and lasting care. He asked that no animal be euthanized simply for lack of a home.
His gift turned a personal devotion into a lasting refuge for the animals of Champaign County.
